Touch rules explained

Whether played at full competition intensity, or simply for fun on a Saturday morning, touch rugby can be a great way to get fit and meet people.

For those new to the game, we have uploaded the Federation International Touch rules of the game to help shed a little more light on the sport.

Southerners touch rugby runs every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning.  Contact Linda to get involved, or to discuss in depth the validity of Rules 10:1 and 1:25.

New (and old!) club member drinks

July 30, 2010
18:30to23:30

If you’re an old, new or prospective Southerner, get down to Soi 8 Bar (Nana BTS) this Friday evening, 30 July for a cheeky beverage, a free BBQ put on by our sponsor Soi 8 Bar, and no doubt some riveting conversation on all things sport, Thailand or the ideological differences between eastern and western political philosophy.

With the new school year just about to kick off, it’s a great opportunity to introduce the club to any friends or colleagues new to Bangkok.

If you are new in town (or have even been around for a while…), and want to get involved in a spot of netball/touch rugby/cricket/rugby, get down and introduce yourself.

All are welcome!

Southerners Annual Ball (Save the date!)

November 20, 2010
18:00

The Southerners Sport Club’s Annual Ball will be happening again this year on Saturday 20 November! Organisation is already underway – section heads will be in contact with members in the coming months about ticketing.

If you’re not a member and would like to attend, or your company would like to sponsor the event, get in contact with Dana Piggott.

What’s On in the Club

The Southerners committee had their first meeting on Tuesday.  The new committee is:

President: Vaughan McLear
Vice-President: Dana Piggott
Secretary: Mark Anderson
Cricket rep: Andrew Spedding
Netball rep: Dana Piggott
Rugby rep: Darrel Lintott
Touch rep: Linda Belonje
Social rep: Jen Hall
Website: Stephen Bell
General committee member: Garry Granger
General committee member: Cat Beach
General committee member: Carl Taylor

Cricket

The cricket lads are winding up their season. The 1st eleven came 3rd in a very competitive competition. They lost the semi-final to the Indian Cricket Club in a close game.

The 2nd eleven will play this weekend and if they win they will go through to the semi-final of the A-League. Good luck to them.

The 3rd eleven have made the semi-final of their league due to an amazing turn of events. They needed one of the top teams, Siam Cricket Club 2, to lose to one of the bottom teams in order for them to progress. Chasing 129 to win, Siam were 100-1 after 13 overs. They ended up losing by 1 run!

Rugby

The Southerners competed in the Pattaya 10’s last weekend, getting knocked out in the plate semi-final by the Thai Barbarians. The boys made up for an early exit in the competition by having a late exit from Khao San road on Sunday night. We wish Brian good luck in his recovery. He somehow broke his finger and his toe in one weekend. Hard core.

Touch Rugby

The touchies have been getting great numbers at trainings and are looking forward to their upcoming tour to Hanoi. They will also compete in a local competition at Bangkok Pattana School on May 16. Good luck to them.

Netball

The netballers have 3 more games left in their season and play the final on the 24th of May. We all hope our most successful section can bring home some more silverware.

Player recruitment

Lastly, the committee would like to ask all members to make an effort to recruit players for all sections. It is coming to the end of the international school year and the club will lose many players. We need to replenish our numbers to remain competitive in all sports.

If you are interested in joining the club, as either a playing or social member, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Contact details can be found here.
