Vientiane Rugby Tour 2011

Southerners rugby are busy physically conditioning themselves for what will no doubt again be an illustrious tour for the Vientiane 10’s. Previous tour tales include drinking a sleeper train dry, introducing tuk tuk rugby to the local population, an abundance of French clowns, push up competitions, and the winning of a trophy despite missing the first two games.

If you’re new to Bangkok, or an old hand too useless to have confirmed your spot, contact Darrel to get involved.

SOUTHERNERS SOCIAL 6S 2011

The Southerners Social 6’s Cricket tournament is happening again this year at the club’s Harrow home ground, with teams from across Bangkok and beyond competing for the coveted 6’s trophy. As usual, refreshments and food will be available at the ground along with some great mates, friends and cricket to keep you occupied. Contact Vaughan if you want to enter a team, or if you’re looking for a spot in a social Southerners team, or are able to help score, run the bar, commentate or umpire.

Thanks especially to event sponsors The Barbeque Store, Soi 8 Bar, KIS International School, Raja’s Fashions and BDS Vircon.

Cambodian rugby tour

As the Southerners ninjas embarked on yet another mission into enemy territory, many questions remained unanswered. Which species to adopt this year? Would horrible chat and receding hairlines will be given a free pass in the local NGO community? Would AirAsia deliberately delay the flight upon seeing Mr. L. Virello on the passenger list?

British Club Fight Night – 2010

Southerners Rugby were out last Friday night at the third annual British Club Fight Night – the event again expertly coordinated by club stalwart Reed Passmore.

Fight Night featured seven top fights, spanning Muay Thai and traditional boxing disciplines. It also featured a substantial amount of white wine on Tables 1 & 2, and an equally substantial sleep-in the following day.

While Andy Steel, the godfather of Southerners boxing, noted the high standard of the fights, Matt Munn wasn’t so impressed. Despite his continual protestations, Munn was visibly disgusted at an absence of legs being swept.

A great night by all – and terrific to catch up with another old Southerner, Dr. Ek (pictured, centre), who had travelled all the way from his hospital placement in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Rugby ready to go one better in Cambodia

Southerners Rugby has just days to go until it jets off to the Kingdom of Cambodia, on a quest to attain the coveted Royal Angkor 10′s trophy.

Tour Captain Darrel Lintott said the men have been working hard in training, studying various avian science manuals and reading up on local history in a bid to impress the local population.

“Matt Munn already has a reputation as one of our most studious tourists, with a particular love of Asian social sciences and anthropology. Since arriving back in Thailand from Hong Kong late on Sunday, he has also been busy studying footage of last weekend’s NZ vs Australia Hong Kong test, looking for clues on how to play a game of rugby, and win. I’m expecting a big tour from the big man,” said Mr. Lintott.

Star southerners winger Gerry Brandreth will also come out of retirement for the tour, journeying from the hills of the Himalayas to Phnom Penh, in homage to the golden jersey (Golden?  Or is it green this time…maybe cammo?) of the great Southerners club.

“Tours are a great opportunity to get the lads together,” said the ever-entertaining Mr. Brandreth. “And there’s no better way to entertain the fellas than with a 1,644 slide epic of my bus rides from Penang to Vang Vien, through Delhi and Bangkok.”

Amidst reports on mass murder court proceedings, Cambodia’s highly esteemed national newspaper The Phnom Penh Post last week reported on the upcoming tournament, featuring a particularly fetching photo of Khun Sodt being taken from behind by a balding rhino.

Watch this space for a tour report and results!  Best of luck fellas!
