New (and old!) club member drinks

July 30, 2010
18:30to23:30

If you’re an old, new or prospective Southerner, get down to Soi 8 Bar (Nana BTS) this Friday evening, 30 July for a cheeky beverage, a free BBQ put on by our sponsor Soi 8 Bar, and no doubt some riveting conversation on all things sport, Thailand or the ideological differences between eastern and western political philosophy.

With the new school year just about to kick off, it’s a great opportunity to introduce the club to any friends or colleagues new to Bangkok.

If you are new in town (or have even been around for a while…), and want to get involved in a spot of netball/touch rugby/cricket/rugby, get down and introduce yourself.

All are welcome!

All Black touched by Southerners

The Southerners and friends from the Bangkok Japanese Rugby Club recently played host to former New Zealand All Black (57 tests) and current Toulouse halfback, Byron Kelleher.

In Bangkok to receive some high-performance technical assistance from some of the finer players from the Southerners and Bangkok Japanese, Kelleher also attended the Southerners’ weekly weekend touch game.

Asked what he thought of the club, Kelleher remarked in his adopted tongue, “L’équipe de touche-rugby de Southerners est magnifique” (It’s sweet as, bro).

Kelleher, Southerners and Bangkok Japanese club members discuss the evolutionary paths and inherent tactical and philosophical differences between northern and southern hemisphere rugby.

Southerners ready for Indochine assault

There’s just over a week to go until the Southerners Touch team flies out to Hanoi to match up against some of SE Asia’s best touch teams in the Indochine Cup.  Best of luck!

Contact Linda Belonje if you want to get involved at the last minute.

How to Play Touch

Its a funny game touch, its like rugby in the sense that there is an egg/oval shaped ball and you must pass backwards, but thats about it!

Like all games there are strategies, theres heaps of websites out there to explain the rules, so if your turning up for the first time take a look through these documents and get a heads up of whats going on. If none of it makes sense, turn up for a run anyway and we’ll explain the ‘need to know’ bits.

The inaugural trip of the LST (Linda’s Southerners Tours)

The inaugural trip of the LST (Linda’s Southerners Tours) was responsible for subjecting its party to an inordinately good time. While it certainly appeared to the unsuspecting that this ‘good time’ was a largely accidental occurrence there is a school of thought that believes that rather more Machiavellian style planning went into this venture than had previously been advertised and we shall be eternally indebted to Linda (of title fame) for her subtle yet cogent qualities, her undeniable organizing abilities and her uncommon air of grace of charm which at once, relaxes and seduces – and, in short, forms a queue.

Surely the lucky participants of this first excursion should not have been exposed to such a level of fun without psychologically preparing themselves beforehand for such intensive frivolities.

We were very fortunate to have a tremendously good-natured, humorous and just plain happy group of people to share the experience with and I am sure that outside the sheer fun we all got other things from the trip, some well publicized and some less so. Not counting the sexual exhaustion, grass burn, effects of the misuse of an array of substances and currencies, a variety of STI’s, and a total of one, as yet, unexplained pregnancy there were simple pleasures to be had plus, of course, the good feeling generated by the sterling (albeit fruitless) on-field performances, camaraderie, and the distinction of being able to remember each other’s, as well as our own, names now.

Actually, I thought our play was pretty good and improved across the two games we played. If we had had the luxury of a third I’m sure we would have been…virtually unbeatable. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the other members of the squad who made this first trip unreservedly enjoyable. Linda, Kanun, Andrew, Jim, Chris, Ting, and Delphine who is, very obligingly, nurturing our quickest sub, in-utero – thanks to all of you for your uncommon friendliness and lack of inclination to highlight my obvious inadequacies and addictions (much appreciated).

I suspect the next venture of LST may be rather better patronised now that we all have stared in the reality show and can regale all and sundry with our multiple escapades. They don’t call it ‘Touch’ for nothing.

Cheers

Boyd

Southerners Clean Up 2007 Pattaya Tens

The Pattaya Tens weekend was a huge success for the Southerners Ladies’ Touch team. Not only did they manage to walk away as the proud winners of the Women’s Touch but we also demonstrated a very fine effort off the field as well. 6 substitutes makes a world of difference. Congratulations to Ludi Lacrosse on her ‘Player of the Tournie’ performance and captaincy skills. Best wishes to Nic Stanners, we hope the eye socket/nose injury is healing well!

Pattaya Womens Touch Champions 2007

We entered a Southerners Womens Touch Team into the recent Pattaya Invitational Womens Touch Tournament and won 4-1 against Manilla Bullettes 1 (run alongside the Pattaya 10’s Rugby).
