Junior touch rugby

The Southerners are now holding organized touch rugby every Saturday for girls and boys aged up to 14 years.  Southerners Junior Touch is great way for your kids to have fun and meet others in a safe, non-contact sporting environment.

Games and coaching will be held from 9-10am on the back field of the Bangkok Pattana School sports fields.

For more information, contact Brad Coulter.

Southerners welcome Matilda!

The Southerners membership expanded in early September with the joyous arrival of Matilda Carole Coulter, a gorgeous daughter to Brad and Claire. Both Mum and Matilda are reportedly doing well.

Of Old German origin, the name Matilda means ‘mighty in battle’. Judging by her lineage, birth weight and height – 9lb (4.08kg) & 54cm – she’ll certainly be mighty on the sports fields in the years to come.

Rad new dad Brad was reportedly itching to get mum and Matilda home to put to use the thousands of dollars of baby gadgetry he acquired in the months leading up to her birth – the nuclear-powered ionic milk warmer, the GPS-enabled baby monitor, the two robot nannies and the carbon-fibre, climate-controlled, bullet-proof, SCUBA-compatible NASA-designed stroller.

Congratulations to Brad and Claire from all at the Southerners!

Touch rules explained

Whether played at full competition intensity, or simply for fun on a Saturday morning, touch rugby can be a great way to get fit and meet people.

For those new to the game, we have uploaded the Federation International Touch rules of the game to help shed a little more light on the sport.

Southerners touch rugby runs every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning.  Contact Linda to get involved, or to discuss in depth the validity of Rules 10:1 and 1:25.

New (and old!) club member drinks

If you’re an old, new or prospective Southerner, get down to Soi 8 Bar (Nana BTS) this Friday evening, 30 July for a cheeky beverage, a free BBQ put on by our sponsor Soi 8 Bar, and no doubt some riveting conversation on all things sport, Thailand or the ideological differences between eastern and western political philosophy.

With the new school year just about to kick off, it’s a great opportunity to introduce the club to any friends or colleagues new to Bangkok.

If you are new in town (or have even been around for a while…), and want to get involved in a spot of netball/touch rugby/cricket/rugby, get down and introduce yourself.

All are welcome!

All Black touched by Southerners

The Southerners and friends from the Bangkok Japanese Rugby Club recently played host to former New Zealand All Black (57 tests) and current Toulouse halfback, Byron Kelleher.

In Bangkok to receive some high-performance technical assistance from some of the finer players from the Southerners and Bangkok Japanese, Kelleher also attended the Southerners’ weekly weekend touch game.

Asked what he thought of the club, Kelleher remarked in his adopted tongue, “L’équipe de touche-rugby de Southerners est magnifique” (It’s sweet as, bro).

Kelleher, Southerners and Bangkok Japanese club members discuss the evolutionary paths and inherent tactical and philosophical differences between northern and southern hemisphere rugby.

Southerners ready for Indochine assault

There’s just over a week to go until the Southerners Touch team flies out to Hanoi to match up against some of SE Asia’s best touch teams in the Indochine Cup.  Best of luck!

Contact Linda Belonje if you want to get involved at the last minute.
