The Southerners Team commenced
the 2002/2003 season in spectacular potential winning
fashion however, no mater how many tall leggy
champagne swilling blondes that the team managed to
recruit the team had an unfortunate run of luck
towards the end of the season due to injuries, weddings,
relocations and pregnancies. It was still an enjoyable
season and it was extremely sad to see so many of our
players Deidre, Emma S, Anita and Mary-Ann leave
Bangkok. Great effort from Annie, Tania, Belinda, Becs,
Deidre and Brigit who saw out the entire season. Emma
P started the season as Captain but only played a few
games until her stomach grew too large Tania
took over the captaincy and did a great job (especially
whilst she was overseas getting married!). Karen P and
Ingrid joined towards the end of the season as our numbers
began to deplete their contribution was greatly
appreciated.
INAUGURAL THAI NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2003
Thailand held its inaugural
National Championships in September 2003. 12 teams participated
including the Singapore u21 Side. The
Bangkok Netball League entered two teams the
rest of the teams were formed from Thailand universities
and PE colleges. The BNL Allsorts contained a number
of current Southerners players Kristina Zanic,
Brigit McCormack, Emma Perry and Jacqui Hale. The BNL
Allsorts surprised themselves by beating the Singapore
U21 side and making the Grand Final. The BNL Allsorts
came a valiant second in the Grand Final and received
a 10,000 baht prize which was donated to the Bangkok
Netball League in order that a Thai team could play
in the upcoming season.

The 2003/2004 was a very
successful season for the Crown Southerners Netball
Team. We won the Bangkok Netball League Regular Season,
the Bangkok Netball League 5 a side tournament, and
an Invitational Asian Netball Tournament. We were runners
up against the Thai National Team in the Thailand National
Tournament. For the first time the Bangkok Netball League
competition was held at the New International School
of Thailand in Sukhumvit Soi 15 on Monday nights.
2ND THAI NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
2004
A
full Southerners team entered the 2nd National Tournament.
The team played well in all of the pool lead up games
to the final, comfortable winners in all matches except
the one against the Thai National Team. After losing
all of our reserves through the pool games to injury
and holidays (?), the magnificent seven had a great
win in the semi final against the eventual third place
getters after a woeful and wobbly start we managed to
have a strong win at the finish. That put us up against
the Thai National Team once again for the Grand Final.
The magnificent seven were extremely grateful that Rachael
Wheaton and Kiri Grimwood were able to assist us in
the grand final against Singha (sad to see no free beer
from the sponsor). The very physical encounter with
notable and interesting umpiring decisions was probably
not the ideal showpiece for the Thai Netball Association’s
marketing theme “Netball the uncontact
sport”, but an interesting game to play and watch
all the same. After a well fought game, Southerners
went down to the Thai National Team. A great effort
considering we were beaten by a team that has been in
intensive training camps and played for the country
at international tournaments whereas we have yet to
hold a practice and are almost twice their age!

Yet again, Southerners have tried to field two teams, and after a shaky start, it looks to be working. Both teams have a flush of new players with only a handful of the old teams left in Bangkok. The early season Thai National Tournament has meant that the Southerners A team has gelled early on and are now top of the ladder. Special thanks goes to Libby Elms, who has managed to turn around the phantom Southerners B team to be flush with great players. After a shaky start Southerners B are now placed 10th on the ladder, but we are expecting great things!
BANGKOK NETBALL INTERNATION TOURNAMENT
Southerners entered one
team, mostly Southerners A Seonaid, Kristina, Steph,
Nicole, Kerry & Gill but also Sarah, Alex and Nardia
special thanks guys for helping us out. We
were placed in the North Pool and on scanning the draw
we realized we had to play Hong Kong Football Club B and
the Thai National Team first up. Nicole gave the team
a good pep talk and everyone pulled together well to win
both games very confidently. This as the first time we
had beaten the Thai National Team with our current players
so we were over the moon. Then we got a little
complacent and had too big a break for lunch and just
managed to scrape through with two wins to the lower teams
in the draw, but not without giving the Captain and supporters
heart attacks on the side line!
The semis saw us line up
against Hong Kong Football A, beating them confidently.
That saw us go into the final against the Thai National
Team. After getting 5 or 6 points up at the beginning
of the game, we seamed to lose our steam against the much
younger, fitter and well rested Thai National Team losing
the games by about 5 points. But well done girls Runners
Up is great!
Notable Mentions
• Kristina, once again thank you for being such a tall shooter in the circle and soldiering on with your knee strapped up!
• Nadia, who came to play with us just for the tournament so passionate about intercepting passes she was throwing herself all around the court.
• Kerry, for her tireless stints at centre
• Gill for her solid “I don’t care how much you contact me I ma going to get the ball” mentality
Alex and Seonaid for keeping us entertained! |
