SOUTHERNERS “GILES CULLINGFORD MEMORIAL CUP” T20 TOURNAMENT

It is on again however the annual Southerners T20 Tournament has had a date change and a renaming. Traditionally played at the end of the regular season, it will now be played as a preseason tournament leading up to the regular Bangkok Cricket League season which starts in November each year. This would give teams a better and less challenging warm up to the regular season  instead of what happened in the past was we suddenly stopped cricket and then after a few months break, found us all staring down the barrel of the league starting up with little or no preparation.

This year we have two groups of 6 teams playing each other within their group and then  after each team is graded within their group, they play a final against the same graded team in the opposite group. This gives all teams a total of 6 games in total.

The main prize this year will be the newly names “Giles Cullingford Memorial Cup”. This is in memory of Southerners player Giles Cullingford who passed away October 2012. Giles was a regular member of the Southerners Cricket Section for 4-5 years and was a very active member within the section. His youthful 50 plus years at times put some of his younger team mates to shame as he was always keen to chase leather, bowl his full quota, bat up in the order and tour with the lads when required. A true Southerner and a true gentleman and will be missed by all. As one of the goals of this tournament is to raise funds for the youth cricket, it is fitting that Giles be associated  to this tournament as well due to his past cricketing feats back in his home country also dedicating a lot of his time to coaching the youngsters.

Games have commenced and the schedule is published. Finals are planned start of November which will be just in time for the BCL season to start.

As mentioned before, we intend to raise some funds for junior cricket so if you are interested in supporting, please contact Southerners cricket at cricket@southerner-bangkok.com
