SOUTHERNERS CRICKET “CRICKET NET FOR PETCHABUN” 20/20 CHALLENGE

Southerners Guinness 20/20 Challenge

Throughout the month of June, Southerners Cricket Club hosted 8 teams in a 20 over competition with the main goal being to raise funds for the development of youth cricket in the rural town of Petchabun. After 4 weeks of preliminary games, the final standings were decided for the finals weekend of June 25 and June 26.

In the Guinness Cup Final, proudly sponsored by Guinness Draft, Champions CC played Thai Thevada with Champions running out eventual winners by 50 runs. A great game with Champions getting off to a good start only to be pegged back by some fine catching by the predominately Thai youth team. At one stage Champions being 8-100 though they regrouped to score 151 after 20 overs.

Southern Cross Sports sponsored the Shield Final, which was between hosts Southerners and Star CC. Southerners batting first to rack up a total of 161 off 20 overs. Star CC faulting at the start though struggled to maintain a solid run rate to be all out for 87 thus Southerners winning the Southerners Cross Shield final.

In the other two games played, Punjab CC were winners in the Global Turf Bowl final defeating Chicha Boyz CC whilst the BDS Plate Final was taken out by the Siam Parrots with a convincing win over Bangkok Cricket Club.

The tournament was a huge success and credit must go to the Southerners Sports Club for hosting and running such a tournament which was all for the development of youth cricket here in the kingdom. Sufficient funds were raised so now that a practice cricket net can be constructed in the town of Petchabun to accommodate approx 700 Thai children presently involved in playing and learning the game of cricket in the area. Included are also a squad of 20 girls playing and learning cricket.

The Southerners would like to thank club sponsors Guinness Draft, Crown Relocations, Champion and Famous Grouse for the great help and support over the last year and especially Guinness Draft and Famous Grouse for supporting this cricket tournament. Also, thanks must be given to the sponsors of the finals being Southern Cross Sports, Global Turf Consulting, BDS Steel Detailing, Champion, Little India Resturant and Novotel Lotus (Silom) for supplying awards and prizes throughout the competition.

Southerners are main supporters of the cricket program in Petchabun as well as other rural areas within Thailand and are always looking for support and backing in order to keep these cricket programs flourishing. Funding is always needed to assist coaching and facilities in the rural areas as well as youth programs here in Bangkok. All of which the Southerners support and back when possible.
